KASTEEL
HUIS BERGH
Where: 's-Heerenberg, The Netherlands
Start construction: 13th century
Accessible: Yes, but not in 2024
This is the largest moated castle in the Netherlands and can be found in the municipality of 's-Heerenberg. It was the ancestral castle of the Counts of Bergh until the end of the 18th century and was built in the 13th century. It was then further expanded in the 14th, 15th and 17th centuries. In 1735, the castle burned down completely, after which it was rebuilt until 1746. In 1939, there was another fire and the castle was destroyed once again. Part of the inventory though could be saved from the burning castle with the help of local residents. The castle was then rebuilt until the end of 1941. In 1946, the Van Heek family of owners (since 1912) transferred Huis Bergh to a foundation. They also housed their art collection in the castle. In 1965, the castle was opened to the public as a museum. Since then, the castle has been opened to the public (with the keep only guided). However, due to a major renovation, the castle will be closed in 2024 and will not reopen its doors until March 2025. By the way, since 2018, two towers opposite to the castle have been available for overnight stays.

This website is under construction.
Until March 16, 2024, this website was hosted elsewhere.
I had to move it to a new website hosting company,
but that means that the website had to be built again from scratch.
I will do this step by step. Thanks for your patience.
In the near future, all castles will have a link to their individual webpage,
with more pictures.
